Description

Minerva Square derives its name from the temple of Minerva, built by Emperor Domitian, which used to be in the square. Today , there are marks on the facade of the church indicating the height reached by the flooding of the Tiber: the highest markings, about 20 meters, indicates the level of the flood in 1598. In front of the church, in the center of the square, there's a small obelisk of Minerva (high about 5 metres) brought from Egypt. It was found by the Dominicans of Santa Maria above Minerva to the monastery garden and the elephant that supports the obelisk was designed by Bernini.
